Nepal Earthquake. A devastating earthquake struck Nepal on Saturday. The damage was extensive, and reports speculate that the death toll is upwards of 4,000. After the initial quake, aftershocks rattled the city, which made it difficult for humanitarian groups to help and reach survivors – many of whom were children in need of medical care. Now, as the city struggles to regroup, thousands of displaced residents are living in tents, and makeshift shelters.

Bruce Jenner. The Olympic athlete and reality-TV star officially announced that he is transitioning into a woman, in an interview with Diane Sawyer on Friday evening. (Jenner used male pronouns in the interview.) “For all intents and purposes, I am a woman,” he told Sawyer.  The interview went viral on social media, and now, Jenner is moving forward as an advocate for transgender issues and awareness.

Baltimore Protests. Many of the city’s residents are still protesting in response to the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who was fatally injured by police. Riots broke out in Baltimore on Monday, which led to massive damages in the city. The Baltimore protests have spawned a nation-wide discussion about the incident, and what it means for the country.

NHL Playoffs. The Stanley Cup semifinals will begin this week. Upcoming playoff games include Tampa Bay vs. Montreal, Washington vs. New York Rangers, Calgary vs. Anaheim, and Minnesota vs. Chicago.

NBA Playoffs. Last week, in the west, the Warriors beat the Pelicans, the Rockets beat the Mavericks, and the Grizzlies beat the Trail Blazers. The Spurs are ahead of the Clippers, 3-2. In the east, the Wizards beat the Raptors, the Bulls beat the Bucks, and the Cavaliers beat the Celtics. The Hawks are ahead of the Nets, 3-2.

To learn more about the minerals and surface processes on Mercury, the Visual and Infrared Spectrometer (VIRS) portion of MASCS has been diligently collecting single tracks of spectral surface measurements since MESSENGER entered Mercury orbit on March 17, 2011. Messenger Collision. NASA’s Messenger spacecraft crashed into Mercury today, reports say. Messenger has orbited the planet for the last four years, gathering information and images that have been sent back to earth for analysis. The spacecraft ran out of fuel on April 24th, and began its downward spiral towards the planet’s surface.
